One Music Fest 2016

One Music Fest

This weekend I found myself in Atlanta with one goal in mind. And that goal was to see the entire Dungeon Family perform together. I've seen Outkast perform three times. I've seen Big Gipp perform solo once. But as much as I'm a fan of the entire Dungeon Family, I've never seen anyone else out the camp perform. Never. So I had one mission this weekend...and that led me to the Lakewood Amphitheater.

I got to the venue as Jazmine Sullivan was wrapping up her set. This festival was packed. There was a diverse crowd in attendance, like any other music festival. I navigated through the crowd to the main stage to see A$AP Ferg perform. In my opinion, Ferg is the best rapper out A$AP Mob. Dude has a lot of energy when he performs. He brought out Marty Baller and they ran through his short catalog. He performed Shabba, Work, and Marty Baller's Big Tymer. The energy was too much for the crowd. I wish these boys were able to perform later in the evening because the crowd that was there at that point was older and they didn't appreciate his music as much as they should have. But nonetheless, he gave a dope performance. I was satisfied with it.

I had to walk back to the smaller stage to check out Busta Rhymes. While I respect Busta and I realize his career is legendary, I'm not much of a fan. Dude can wrap circles around most muthafuckers, but I couldn't remember many of his songs. Busta came out the gate with SUPER energy as expected. He ran through songs like Scenario, Got You All In Check and the Look At Me Now remix. I checked out when he performed that song he had with Mariah Carey. His commentary was great as he told the ladies "sing like you fuckin" and "y'all better sing my shit". The crowd was into him, but like I said, that's not really my lane.

So I made my way back to the main stage to check out Ice Cube. Ice Cube still performs like it's 1989. This dude really gives it all at his shows. He ran through his hits like Check Yo Self, We Be Clubbin (which is a horrible song), You Can Do It (which is worse), Today Was A Good Day and more. But when Cube went into that N.W.A. shit!!!! The crowd lost their shit. From Fuck Da Police to Straight Outta Compton, Cube set the stage on fire. Props to him for bringing W.C. out there with him as a hype man.

After Ice Cube got off stage, I made my way BACK to the smaller stage to see Erykah Badu. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't get close enough to get hypnotized cause of the amount of people there to see her. She came on about 40 minutes late so I didn't catch much of her set. Fuck that, I had to head back to the main stage to see Dungeon Family. So yeah, I missed ALL of her shit.

But this was what I paid for.

When the first song they performed was Dirty South, I knew this was going to be a good night. Big Gipp, Big Boi and Cool Breeze on stage made me feel complete. But man, when Andre 3000 came on stage for Black Ice, I got chill bumps. They brought out Witchdoctor to perform Holiday. I forgot all about that dude. He had a solid ass album. They brought out Backbone. And that guy is one of the most underrated rappers ever. Then Ceelo hit the stage. And that dude has that aura of a star. Hands down. A lot of people give T-Mo grief but I like that dude too. Hell they even brought back Kilo Ali to perform Love In Ya Mouth with Big Boi. I don't know where the fuck they dug this guy up from!!!! Sleepy Brown and Rico Wade came out and performed Spottieottiedopaliscious...with a live band. That was too fuckin dope. But when Outkast performed Whole World and brought out Killer Mike, I lost my shit. Killer Mike is GREAT. If you're not hip to dude, you're doing yourself a disservice. And that Run The Jewels shit is cool...but Dungeon Family Killer Mike is GREAT. After that, Killer Mike brought out Bone Crusher for Neva Scared. But man, when T.I. came out for his verse, the crowd went NUTS. They finished off their set with Liberation and of course, Ms. Badu made an appearance with Dungeon Family. Just a great show. Only complaint I had was not having Khujo Goodie out there. If he would've been there, it would have been perfect.

Great show from the people who I did see.

Oh yeah, I met Andra Day too. She's fuckin beautiful.
